Turn your own memories into Canvas Art…yes, you can do that!

Along with advances in computer, cell phone and other digital technologies there is now a new method of printing called “wide format digital printing”. This is basically the home style ink jet printer we all know and love but now about 10 times larger. Commercial print service providers now use these large scale printing machines to print on demand. That means you can print something one-at-a-time, for use by one person, which is a service that wasn’t possible in the old days using offset printing presses. This modern day marriage between computers and printers (able to accept digital commands) has truly changed the idea of what’s possible. And consumers are the beneficiary.

These wide format digital printers also allow printing on a variety of substrates such as Canvas, metal and even acrylic surfaces. Imagine turning a favorite photo of your Family, Dog or Vacation into Canvas Art?  Well, you can do that now.  And, like other technologies, the cost of creating a custom Canvas Art piece for your home has now come down a lot. A 24”x36” photo enlargement on Canvas now costs under $100. It is even possible to go as large as 40”x60” creating a virtual panorama for placement above a sofa couch. And the Art is about you now! The subject is about you and your life. Like the kids say these days…”How cool is that?”.

After your selected photo is printed on Canvas the print is typically stretched over a bare wood frame called “stretcher bars”. This is actually the traditional method for mounting canvas in use for centuries. The finished canvas artwork is usually offered with two choices for depth. A 5/8” depth is the minimum and is typically selected for use with a conventional picture frame. A deeper 1-1/2” depth has now become popular for use without a frame. This is the so-called “Gallery Wrap” (popular in Europe) in which a portion of the image is actually printed over the sides of the canvas to create a more 3-d appearance.
